  1. Hi.

I'm well overdue some new wedges and was just curious to see what grinds people are playing and whether anyone is gaming some of the newer ones? I'm looking for a little more versatility.

On a side note, got my GT3 driver last weekend.....OH MY GOD. What a club that is!

    Hi Adam,

My current set up is SM10 50.12F, 54.14D and I have added the WW60 A+ grind into the bag when released earlier this year. All raw as I've always loved raw wedges.

I have been fitted a couple of times for wedges so the 50 & 54 set ups are pretty dialed in. The F is a great grind on full shots, very standard grind for a GW, fairway or rough it performs really well. I really like the D in my 54, works really well for me on full shots, but I like that with the bit of heel relief I can open it up from 100 yards in from the fairway, rough, and its really good on longer sand shots too. Even around the green I play a lot of 54 deg low check chips so I find that the D Grind is very versatile and works well for me. 60deg wise, I've always liked the K grind out of bunkers, really helped me improve out of the sand a few years ago when I was struggling (wider sole & higher bounce = less duffed bunker shots = getting it out of the same more often = more confidence when in the sand = more aggressive / better shots out of the sand = more sand saves!! ) Having said this, I personally found that the standard K had too much bounce during the summer when conditions get firm and I would struggle with opening it up around the green to play flop shots etc. I moved into a low bounce K which I loved, then experimented with a T Grind etc which was really good off firm ground, but not as good for me out of the sand. When fitted for the SM10's I was actually between D & M grinds. I went with the D based on its performance during the fitting and it worked well earlier in the season but as conditions started to firm up I felt it was a bit too much bounce for me and I struggled (most likely mentally). I liked the sound of the A+ grind (wide sole, mid bounce, started off as a M grind but with the sole smoothed out) so I ordered one and love it, its been in the bag since release and it will be staying in there!

    Hey Adam.

    Hope all is well.

    I’m currently gaming a 44 T150 PW, 48F 14 SM9, 54 10S and a 58 10s all in SM9’s.

The set up works well for me and my game but boy you could play with wedges all day long!

So many grinds available to you but all depends if you play different courses and different conditions which we have a big eff on what grinds you will really need all year round.

Maybe worth trying to get to a fitting centre for a wedge fitting. Your be surprised with the out come

Good luck finding your perfect set up.

Great topic, and a very thorough response from Tom too.

I have a similar setup in terms of loft - 50.8F, 54.8M (bent to 55), 60.12D. I think with club lofts becoming stronger, jumping from PW to 52 degree means that 52s are becoming a bit redundant.

I generally prefer to hit 70-80% knockdown with wedges so rarely open up the face unless short sided, the 55 from 90 yards is pretty much my favourite shot. I have a steep swing so at this time of year by divots get a bit ridiculous, even with a high bounce 60. In the summer I always fear that greenside chips are compromised by the high bounce, I have thought about putting a low bounce 60 option in, but not yet pulled the trigger. I'm an average bunker player and think it's an area of my game that I could and should improve with some dedicated focus - I'm extremely defensive at the moment and basically just try to splash out and 2 putt every time, I'd certainly benefit from some versatility and ambition!

My set up is 50 F 54/58S in Sm10 with black Amt red s300 Black shafts to match my irons shaft. I also have a k grind for the soft days but tend to practice more than play as when you change about it very rarely works as you think and you are more comfortable with your normal set up I appreciate that is more from the fitting or your choice? Two things I believe are more important is a short game practice area/ coaching that makes you understand and how to use the clubs properly/better for the variety of shots you need and when to play them? This also improves your expectations and normally the performance. Also the variety of courses you play how to adapt or the practice you need to play them buying the clubs on a specific day like I did at Foxhills and others doesn’t make them perfect everyday so the need to improvise and practice becomes important.
  6. As already mentioned, having a fitting is the real way forward. Secondly, what do you need them for? What type of turf/ground conditions do you usually from from. Do you ever need to swap over a wedge or two when playing different conditions, maybe at another type f course e.g. links/parkland or do to changing weather conditions at your own course - wet in winter, dry in summer.
I usually have a choice of two sand wedges in my car boot. A 60° 14 K grind for soft and dry sand and an 60° 8MJ grind for wetter heavier sand. I don’t think the J available anymore.
I usually have a 60° 4 L grind for playing short sided shots around the green, especially when the ground is like concrete in summer or the bunkers are damp and hard in winter. Sometimes I swap this out for an old 62° T grind which I’ve increased to 64° and fold down the leading edge, this really lets me slide it under the ball when faced with very tight lies with the green above me.
So yes, have a fitting and sort out your pitching and gap wedges after that it’s all about what you need it for around the green. The old trustworthy M grind is still a great all rounder.
  7. Very helpful, Thanks!

The F & D grinds definitely sound as though they are what I am after in terms of the lower lofted wedges. Interestingly I have also been looking into the A+ for my 60 so Tom's info is very helpful. I guess a fitting is the best way to go to dial them in properly. I'm based in Dorset, has anyone got any recommendations as to where to go for this?
  8. I think the new K* has got to be worth a look. With its low bounce, pre ground leading edge and the extra heel relief it must be a winner. In fact I’ve already ordered mine.
